Bonded Warehousing —
Duty-Deferred Storage, Delhi

Not every consignment needs to clear customs the moment it arrives. If you are managing cash flow, waiting for a buyer, or building an import buffer — a customs-bonded warehouse lets your goods sit inside India, duty-unpaid, until you are ready to release them.

What Is It

How Customs-Bonded Warehousing Works

A customs-bonded warehouse (Section 58/59 of the Customs Act, 1962) is a facility licensed by CBIC where imported goods can be stored without payment of customs duty. Duty becomes payable only when goods are removed for home consumption — not when they arrive.

Duty Deferral

Import duty (BCD + IGST) is not paid until you actually need the goods. Your working capital stays in your business, not in customs.

Re-Export Option

Goods stored in bond can be re-exported without ever paying Indian customs duty. Ideal for trading companies and sample importers.

Flexible Drawdown

Release partial quantities as and when required. Pay duty only on what you take out, when you take it out.

Process

The Bonded Storage Process — 6 Steps

01

Goods Arrive at IGI Cargo Terminal

Your consignment lands at Delhi airport or arrives at the ICD.

02

Into-Bond Bill of Entry Filed

NG Pillai files a Bill of Entry for warehousing (not home consumption). Duty is assessed but not paid.

03

Transfer Under Customs Permit

Goods move from the port/airport to the licensed bonded facility under a customs transit document.

04

Goods Stored in Bond

Your inventory is held in the licensed bonded facility — days, weeks, or months — under customs bond. No duty paid.

05

Ex-Bond Release When You're Ready

You advise the quantity needed. We file an Ex-Bond Bill of Entry, pay duty on that quantity only, and deliver to you.

06

Or Re-Export — Zero Duty

If goods are re-exported, we file a re-export application. Goods leave under customs supervision. No Indian duty ever paid.

Who Uses It

Common Uses of Bonded Warehousing

Trading Companies

Import for resale but release stock only as orders are confirmed. Avoid tying up duty payments in unsold inventory.

Manufacturers

Import inputs in bulk and drawdown against production schedules. Pay duty quarter-by-quarter, not on a year's supply at once.

E-Commerce Importers

Hold seasonal inventory in bond. Clear and pay duty only when the selling season opens.

Re-Exporters

Goods purchased in India to re-export to a third country can be stored in bond and leave without attracting Indian duty.

Sample Importers

Trade show samples, demonstration equipment, and temporary imports stored in bond for easy re-export.

Cash-Flow Constrained Importers

High-duty goods (electronics, spirits, auto parts) where BCD + IGST creates significant working capital pressure.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the maximum period goods can stay in a bonded warehouse?

Under the Customs Act, goods can typically be warehoused for up to one year. The Principal Commissioner of Customs can extend this period in justified cases. Most importers plan quarterly or semi-annual drawdowns within the first year.

Do I pay any charges while goods are in bond?

You pay warehouse storage charges (facility and service fees) but no customs duty until drawdown. There may be interest implications for extended warehousing periods — we advise on this case by case.

Can I inspect or sample goods in the bonded warehouse?

Yes, with customs permission. Sampling, inspection, repacking, and relabelling can be carried out under customs supervision within the bonded facility. We arrange the customs officer's presence for these activities.

What happens if I want to re-export goods from the bonded warehouse?

We file a re-export application with customs. Goods are examined if required, a Let Export Order is obtained, and the goods move directly from the warehouse to the export gateway. No Indian customs duty is ever paid.

Is my stock secure in the bonded warehouse?

The facility operates under a customs bond — inventory integrity is maintained under CBIC-compliant bonding arrangements. Access is logged, CCTV is continuous, and customs can conduct periodic stock verification.
