We read the regulation

India's trade environment is moving fast. New compliance obligations, port-level alerts and duty-scheme revisions are live right now — and getting ahead of them is the difference between a clear shipment and a costly hold. The difference between a good broker and a great one is whether they come to you with problems or solutions.

09 — Frequently Asked

The questions importers
actually ask us.

Straight answers on customs clearance, freight, bonded warehousing, the India–UAE corridor and AEO — from a licensed customs broker, not a brochure.

Customs Clearance
How long does customs clearance take in India?
For a compliant shipment with complete documentation, customs clearance is typically completed within 1–3 working days. AEO-certified importers receive priority assessment and reduced examination, which shortens this further. Most delays come from incomplete or mismatched documents, not the process itself.
What documents are required for customs clearance?
At minimum you need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, bill of entry, and your IEC (Import Export Code) — plus any product-specific licences such as BIS, FSSAI or a CITES permit. Missing or inconsistent paperwork is the most common cause of holds and demurrage.
Freight Forwarding
Does NG Pillai handle both air and sea freight?
Yes — NG Pillai arranges air and ocean freight (both FCL and LCL), consolidation and multimodal movements through a global carrier network. Booking, documentation and customs clearance are coordinated as a single chain, so your cargo and its paperwork move together rather than in sequence.
What is the difference between FCL and LCL shipping?
FCL (Full Container Load) reserves an entire container for one shipper; LCL (Less than Container Load) shares one container across several shippers. FCL is usually more economical once your cargo fills roughly half a container or more; LCL suits smaller consignments where paying for a full container isn't justified.
Bonded Warehousing
What is a customs bonded warehouse?
A bonded warehouse is a customs-licensed facility — under Sections 57–59 of the Customs Act, 1962 — where imported goods are stored without immediate payment of customs duty. Duty is deferred until the goods are cleared for home consumption, which protects working capital and lets you stage inventory close to the port.
Can I defer customs duty using bonded warehousing?
Yes. Goods can be held in bond and duty paid only on ex-bond clearance — when you actually need the goods. Schemes such as MOOWR allow extended duty deferral for manufacturing operations. NG Pillai operates bonded warehousing in partnership with PWC.
India–UAE Trade Advisory
Can I claim preferential duty under the India–UAE CEPA?
Yes — many goods traded between India and the UAE qualify for reduced or nil customs duty under CEPA, provided you hold a valid Certificate of Origin and meet the rules-of-origin criteria. Bilateral trade has crossed US$100 billion under the agreement, yet many importers still pay full duty because their origin documentation isn't in order.
Does NG Pillai operate in the UAE?
Yes — NG Pillai has offices in Dubai and Sharjah, supporting India–UAE corridor shipments, re-export structures and CEPA documentation from both ends of the trade lane. This dual-country presence is central to how we handle corridor cargo.
AEO Services
What is AEO certification and why does it matter?
AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) is a trusted-trader status granted by Indian Customs to compliant businesses, bringing faster clearance, reduced examination, deferred duty and priority treatment. NG Pillai has held AEO certification since 2014 — a credential most customs brokers do not have.
How does working with an AEO-certified broker help me?
An AEO-certified broker signals proven compliance to Customs, which translates into lower scrutiny and faster release for your shipments. In practice that means fewer holds and examinations, lower demurrage risk, and more predictable timelines on your cargo.
